Summer Camp for High School Students: Afternoon Classes, Sports, and Excursions
Weekly afternoon classes in areas such as arts and crafts, cooking and well being, drama, and more will be offered to the students. Students will change the afternoon classes every week, just like the morning classes.
Sports, such as swimming, soccer, bowling, fitness, and basketball will be offered almost every day. As usual, students will sign up in the morning for a selected sport for the day.
Students will be divided into teams on the day of arrival, and team leaders will be appointed. Teams will engage in competitions and games mostly in the evenings.
Weekend excursions
Two weekend excursions are included in the camp.
1. One day excursion to the Rila Monastery
We will visit the Rila Monastery complex, situated in the North-West part of the Rila Mountains at a height of 1100 m. Built in the 10th century, it played an important role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Bulgaria. Destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century, the complex was rebuilt, and nowadays it is an impressive monument of the Bulgarian National Revival architecture and painting. It has been included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.
2. One day excursion to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria
We will travel to Sofia to visit the National Museum of History www.historymuseum.org with its rich collection of more that 650 000 artifacts, including Thracian gold. The visit will also include the Boyana Church www.boyanachurch.org with architecture and paintings from the 11th, 13th, and 19th century, another UNESCO World Heritage site, and the National Art Gallery. A tour of the city center and lunch in Sofia is part of the full day trip.
