A semester or a year at the American University in Bulgaria offers you an unrivaled academic and cultural experience on campus and off – if you are open and adventurous enough to look beyond the ordinary.

At AUBG you study with a highly talented group of young people from 24 different countries. Eager to learn (yet always ready for fun), AUBG students will challenge and engage you.

You learn a new meaning of multicultural. Most AUBG students come from countries in the Southeastern region of Europe where ethnic and religious tensions have often been high. At AUBG students value what brings them together instead of what divides them.

As an American student, you experience pleasing similarity and challenging differences. The language is English; the instructional model and most of the faculty, American. No supermarkets, just markets. People celebrate ancient holidays and festivals. Students play baseball - and dance the folk dances of their great-grandparents.

You will live in a country that has one of the richest cultural histories in Europe. Bulgaria has been the site of several great civilizations including the legendary Thracians. It's the center of early Slavonic culture, home of Orthodox Christianity, part of the Byzantine commonwealth, subject to Ottoman rule, and celebrant of several national revivals.

A land of great natural beauty, Bulgaria offers fine winter skiing, stunning mountain scenery for hiking, and excellent summer holidays on the Black Sea.

Greece (only 55 miles away) and Turkey are neighbors. Some of the most interesting capital cities in Europe are only an hour or two away by air or a bit longer by train or bus.

As a visiting American, you will quickly make friends. AUBG is residential and small. You will know your faculty in ways often not possible at a larger school at home. You'll participate in new activities and see student government taken seriously.

You can select courses from many areas of study including, but not limited to, business administration, computer science, journalism, European studies that readily transfer home because AUBG is accredited both in the USA and Bulgaria.

You may earn scholarship support. You may be eligible for aid from Salgo-Noren Scholarships. Bulgaria is also an "area of emphasis" for NSEP Boren Scholarships, about which your study abroad advisor can tell you more.
