Gabriel: Gateway to Europe's National Libraries
Gabriel is the World Wide Web service of Europe's
National Libraries represented in the
Conference of European National Librarians (CENL). In Gabriel
you can find information about all the National Libraries of Europe, their services and the
online exhibitions they offer.
Internet Public Library
The Internet Public Library (IPL), is a public service
organization and learning/teaching
environment at the University of Michigan School of Information.
IPL provides library services to Internet users. Activities include: finding, evaluating,
selecting, organizing,
describing, and creating information resources; and direct
assistance to individuals.
Library of Congress (LC)
The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal
cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with
nearly 128 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. The collections include more than 29
million books and other printed materials, 2.7 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.8 million
maps, and 57 million manuscripts.
The WWW Virtual Library
The VL is the oldest catalog of the web, started by Tim
Berners-Lee, the creator
of html and the web itself. Unlike commercial catalogs, it is
run by a loose
confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for
particular areas
in which they are expert; even though it isn't the biggest index
of the web,
the VL pages are widely recognized as being amongst the
highest-quality
guides to particular sections of the web.
