The Global Family Planning Revolution: Three Decades of Population Policies and Programs

The striking upsurge in population growth rates in developing countries at the close of World War II gained force during the next decade. From the 1950s to the 1970s, scholars and advocacy groups publicized the trend and drew troubling conclusions about its economic and ecological implications. Private educational and philanthropic organizations, government, and international organizations joined in the struggle to reduce fertility. Three decades later this movement has seen changes beyond anyone's most optimistic dreams, and global demographic stabilization is expected in this century.

Knowledge Flows, Patent Citations and the Impact of Science on Technology
UNU-MERIT working papers

By Onder Nomaler and Bart Verspagen
Technological innovation depends on knowledge developed by scientific research. The number of citations made in patents to the scientific literature has been suggested as an indicator of this process of transfer of knowledge from science to technology. Authors  provide an intersectoral insight into this indicator, by breaking down patent citations into a sector-to-sector matrix of knowledge flows. They  then propose a method to analyze this matrix and construct various indicators of science intensity of sectors, and the pervasiveness of knowledge flows. Their  results indicate that the traditional measure of the number of citations to science literature per patent captures important aspects intersectoral knowledge flows, but that other aspects are not captured. In particular, they  show that high science intensity implies that sectors are net suppliers of knowledge in the economic sector, but that science intensity does not say much about pervasiveness of either knowledge use or knowledge supply by sectors. Authors  argue that results are related to the specific and specialized nature of knowledge.

M/C Journal
M/C Journal was founded (as "M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture") in 1998 as a place of public intellectualism analyzing and critiquing the meeting of media and culture. As such, it is fully blind peer-reviewed, but also open to submissions and responses from anyone on the Internet. We take seriously the need to move ideas outward, so that our cultural debates may have some resonance with wider political and cultural interests. Each issue is organized around one word theme (see our past issues), and is edited by one or two editors with a particular interest in that theme. The editors change for each issue. Each issue has a feature article which engages with the theme in some detail, followed by several shorter articles.

Invisible Culture
This journal is dedicated to explorations of the material and political dimensions of cultural practices: the means by which cultural objects and communities are produced, the historical contexts in which they emerge, and the regimes of knowledge or modes of social interaction to which they contribute. As the title suggests, Invisible Culture problematizes the unquestioned alliance between culture and visibility, specifically visual culture and vision. Cultural practices and materials emerge not solely in the visible world, but also in the social, temporal, and theoretical relations that define the invisible.

Create a Family Tree

Geni

Geni is a tool for understanding and staying in touch with your family. Geni lets you create a family tree through fun and simple interface. You can expand your tree by adding relatives' email addresses. They will be invited to join your tree and can add other relatives. Your tree will continue to grow as relatives invite other relatives. Each family member has a profile which can be viewed by clicking their name in the tree. This helps family members learn more about each other and stay in touch. Family members can also share photos and work together to build profiles for common ancestors.

Wise Guide
This Wise Guide portal was designed to introduce many fascinating, educational and useful resources available from the nation's library and one of the most popular Web sites of the federal government.
The "Wise Guide" will be refreshed monthly, much like a magazine, offering links to the best of the Library's online materials. Each of these "articles" is based on items contained in a collection, database, reading room or other area of the Library's online offerings.  User can see that LC is "more than a library," and holdings range from prints, photographs, films, audio recordings, maps, manuscripts, music and digital materials to (of course) books.
