This
bibliography is based on material received in response to request of AUBG
faculty and students majoring in Journalism and Mass Communication. The
bibliography focuses upon research and scholarly works relating to public
relations. The bibliography includes most relevant books and other resources
published through 1950 2000. It has two primary purposes: to serve as
reference tools and to suggest materials for research and reading. Each entry
represents a bibliographic citation.
Public Relations has been taught at
AUBG as a special-topics class in Journalism-Mass Communications. It is appropriate not only for JMC
students but also for those studying business management and marketing, since
public relations is (or should be) an integral part of these disciplines.The
course is designed to help students understand the role and function of public
relations in society and organizations, especially business. It introduces, and
allows practice in, various methods of generating publicity for organizations
and individuals. To survive, organizations must communicate well with their
publics, both internal (e.g., employees) and external (e.g., community leaders,
stockholders and consumers). Effective public relations programs begin with a
detailed analysis of the situation, plus a thorough understanding of those
audiences and the issues at stake. Excellent research and writing skills are essential In
the Public Relations course at AUBG, students learn to:
· Find
and evaluate research materials;
· Develop
clear, concise public-relations program objectives based on organizational goals
and the results of their research;
· Determine
materials that need to be developed and written to achieve program objectives;
· Write
pitch letters, news releases, position papers, backgrounders and public service
announcements.
This bibliography lists the
resources available in the AUBG Library that cover the fundamentals of Public
Relations and a variety of related topics.
