What is Information Literacy?

 

Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.”

Who is information literate?

 

·           Determine the extent of information needed

·             Access the needed information effectively and efficiently

·             Evaluate information and its sources critically

·             Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base

·             Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose

·             Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information,

             and access and use information ethically and legally

Information Literacy (IL) at Panitza library

 

Teaching library users how to:

 

·         Locate and use library materials

·         Evaluate the information they find

·         Search the library online catalog and databases

·         Select the most appropriate investigative methods or information retrieval systems

·         Become aware of information, as it exists in its different formats: print, electronic, etc. 

 

Types of Instruction Offered at Panitza Library

 

1. Orientation training for freshmen
2. In-class training for students
3. Personal training for students and faculty
4. Training presentations on subject databases

5. Drop-in sessions
6. Library tours for outside visitors
7. Open days training and personal presentations for students, faculty and staff
 

1. Orientation training for freshmen – an hour training, which is within the framework of the whole Freshmen Orientation Week. First year students are given the ABC of the library:


- The library
’s facilities

- The different collections and their locations

- The overall organization – Library of Congress classification system, Call Numbers, how to locate books on the shelves

- Borrowing procedures - loan periods and fines

- Using the library webpage

- Searching the library catalog; Patron access

- Brief overview of the online databases

- Reserve procedures

2. In-class training for students

 

General Library instruction – These presentations are integrated with ENG 101 and ENG102 classes. The presentation includes a detailed instruction on the 7 steps of research:

-  Identifying and developing a topic

-  Finding background information

-  Using the online catalog to find books

-  Finding periodicals articles (print and electronic)

-  Finding Internet resources

-  Evaluating sources

-  Citation of sources

Discipline-Specific Library Instruction – These are presentations tailored to a specific class topic. They can include a very detailed instruction on using a discipline-specific database, information on the topic in other databases, a selection of reference materials on the topic, specifics in searching for information on the internet on the topic and others. They can also be tailored to a specific course assignment.
