Fifth AMICAL Conference "Learning from Each Other: Assessment and Collaborative Learning"
to be held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria from May 25 - 28, 2008. It provides a forum for sharing ideas and expertise, for learning about developments in the field of libraries and higher education and for collaborations.
AMICAL is an international consortium of American-model, liberal arts institutions of higher learning. The mission is to advance learning, teaching and research through the collaborative development of library and information services and curricular resources at member institutions.
Ifrane, 2007
The 4th annual meeting of AMICAL was hosted by the Mohammed VI Library at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, May 27-30, 2007. The focus was “Integrating library and IT services for better learning.” The Keynote address was delivered by Susan Perry from Mt. Holyoke College, Senior Advisor for Liberal Arts Colleges at the Andrew Mellon Foundation and Director of Programs at the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). Three major themes were discussed: “Collaboration on Technology-Enhanced Information Environments’, “Collaboration for Academic Integrity” and “Networks: Sharing Resources, Sharing Expertise.” NITLE post-conference workshops were given about the use of social software tools in higher education environments, and information services tools and systems such as learning management systems and institutional repositories.
Cairo, 2006
The 3rd annual meeting of AMICAL was held at the American University in Cairo, May 31- June 3, 2006. The theme was “Integrated Learning: Collaboration with Faculty and Shareholders on Campus”. Keynote speakers included Joan Lippincott, Associate Executive Director of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), and Susan Perry from Mt. Holyoke College, Senior Advisor for Liberal Arts Colleges at the Andrew Mellon Foundation and Director of Programs at the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). On the second day of the conference, a Technology Forum featured presentations from AMICAL members spotlighting inexpensive, free software, tools, services, etc. via Poster Sessions and online demonstrations.
Beirut, 2005
The next AMICAL meeting was hosted by the Lebanese American University in Beirut, June 1-3, 2005. There members formed cross-institutional teams, devised projects and policies, set timelines, and began actively working as a consortium. Five major interest groups were established to work throughout the coming year: Databases, Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery, Information Literacy, Professional Development, and E-Books.
Paris, 2004
The first meeting in Paris was held May 7-9, 2004: Exploring Consortial Possibilities between American International Colleges and Academic Libraries: Presentations and Workshops for the Development of a Consortium. At that meeting administrators, librarians and information technology specialists from independent American liberal arts colleges and universities in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East learned more about each other, discussed resource and information sharing, and explored consortial possibilities. By the end of the meeting, letters of intent had been signed by all participants.
